Proven to Increase STAAR Scores

Forney ISD, a Progress Learning customer, partnered with Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Research and Reform in Education to conduct an independent efficacy study spanning testing periods across 2023 and 2024.

This study examined how the use of Progress Learning influenced student performance, engagement, and achievement outcomes across multiple grade levels on both STAAR and NWEA MAP. Key findings from this study include:

  • Significant gains in math, reading, and science achievement
  • Stronger performance on both STAAR and NWEA MAP assessments
  • Positive impacts across student subgroups, including SPED, Black, and Hispanic students
  • Increased engagement and mastery through targeted instruction and adaptive learning paths

About STAAR Testing

The State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness test, also known as the STAAR, is a state testing program developed by the Texas Education Agency. The assessments are designed to measure students’ understanding of grade-level content and their readiness for the next academic level. STAAR provides valuable insights into student progress and helps ensure that standards are being met across Texas schools.

For middle school exams, students take the reading language arts exam in the beginning to middle of April. 8th grade science and social studies take place in mid to late April, and math is at the end of April.

Students in 6th and 7th grade in Texas take math and RLA (reading language arts) exams. Students in 8th grade also take math and RLA exams, but also take social studies and science exams.

How Do You Prepare for STAAR Exams?

Start by reviewing the STAAR released test questions from the Texas Education Agency to understand the test’s content and structure. Then, create your own questions and assessments to help students with the topic they need to study.

Progress Learning makes specific standards aligned practice and exam review easy with a variety of tools for teachers, including a comprehensive assessment and assignment builder.

For middle school educators, your approach to STAAR test prep may vary by student and subject. Consider forming small groups, incorporating gamification into your instruction, or scheduling daily practice time to keep students engaged. By tailoring your teaching strategy to your students, you will improve their TEKS mastery and STAAR success.
